Design Techniques

Red Herring into a
Bait & Switch

In this area I used the elevator as a red herring to bait the player to get them to a specific spot and upon reaching it the door closes and the player has nothing else to do other than to turn around and be presented with another way forward

Foreshadow

I wanted to foreshadow the end part of the level to immerse the player

WOW Moment

I wanted to give the player a quick view of the city and give the player a chance to breathe after a intense combat encounter

Level loop

In this area I wanted to create a flow across this part of the level, I added a small scale level loop. It ties the space together.

Blockout Process

Referenser

Gathering references

I began this project by gathering reference pictures with the theme i wanted to set the experience in.

Blockout & Playtest

A rough blockout helped me get a feel for the scale of the level. I began playtesting to see what worked and what I needed to iterate. I started to refine the level once i felt the level flow was good. I made sure to keep playtesting and asking others for playtests to find out which areas needed to be improved.

Reflections

The initial goal was to create a full Darktide mission, but i very quickly realized that it would not work given the time window.

Downscaling gave me the opportunity to iterate and improve my design.

However when i decided that my second project would be a Warhammer themed i changed the theme of this piece from Warhammer because i didn't want to have 2 Warhammer projects.
